I myself use the iPhone6. I think that with 11.2.3 you friend can upgrade to 11.3 and higher.

Are you sure that your friend did exactly as written in the documentation? Originally on my iPhone 6 was version 11.2 and I do not remember that with the installation of the application there were difficulties. Perhaps he refused to install the profile, so it’s not in the menu.
