Hey Thunkers!
As many of you are already aware (and some of you remember from last year) the Google Play store will soon be updating their Play Store Policies:
https://developer.android.com/distribute/play-policies
This will affect new apps and published apps in slightly different ways.
New Apps
Anyone publishing a new app, on or after August 3rd, 2020 must have an APK file that targets Android 10 (API 29)
Upgrading Apps
If you’re upgrading an existing app, you have until November 2nd, 2020 before this requirement comes into effect.
Essentially, if you have published an app to the Play Store, you can update it, without any trouble, until early November.
What API does Thunkable target?
At the moment, we’re targeting Android 9 or API 28, which we upgraded to around this time last year. One of the main frameworks that we use, Expo, is still at level 28. They are working hard to get everything ready for API 29. Once Expo has been updated, we need a few days ourselves to update and test our own system. As a “guesstimate” it might take another week or two to get updated to level 29.
Bottom Line?
-
Publish as a Web App and Publish to the iOS App store are completely unaffected by this. This specifically relates to Android apps, published to Google Play for the first time, after August 3rd.
-
Any published app can be updated until November 2nd, 2020.
