List not adding to variable

I can not figure out why this is not working.

If I add straight to simple list 1 it works. But if I add to a variable and then try to set that lists text items to the variable it adds nothing. I’m confident this used to work but can’t now find out why.

If you set participantsList to a label, what shows there?
