# Google maps API charging?

So I noticed if you call a google maps API for directions you get charged now. Is there a way around it like a basic API call or are we just stuck paying $5/mo regardless for it?

I do see where the pricing has updated.

The basic [Google maps embed API](https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/embed/?hl=en) is still free regardless of calls.
